 Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman Holds Its Fifth Annual Fashion Seminar

We held our fifth annual Fashion Seminar for leaders in the Fashion Industry on June 23, 2009.  More than 70 members of the Fashion Industry attended the Seminar, which was entitled “R is for Recession (& Recovery)” and covered strategies for surviving the current market downturn, as well as the types of business transactions that are possible in the current market environment.

C. J. Erickson, a member of our Customs, International Cargo and Regulatory Compliance group discussed new apparel safety requirements and cost effective compliance measures. 

C.J. was followed by Joel Karni Schmidt, a partner in our Intellectual Property group, who discussed recent cases involving Levis Strauss, Abercrombie & Fitch, Joseph Abboud, Woody Allen, and American Apparel.   Joel also provided tips on measures companies can take to avoid unnecessary and costly lawsuits.

Richard Kestenbaum, of Triangle Capital LLC, a leading private investment banking firm was CLL’s guest speaker.  He discussed the kinds of transactions possible in today's environment.

The event was moderated by Arlana Cohen, one of our  Litigation partners, who suggested that companies carefully review their trademark portfolios and get rid of the dead wood.  Arlana also provided an update on the status of the Design Piracy Prohibition Act.

The event was produced by Bill Borchard, a partner in our Intellectual Property group, who introduced the event and discussed unique and creative steps that some companies such as Ralph Lauren are taking to survive the economic downturn.
