The Chairman of our firm, Jonathan (“Jonny”) King, gave a musical CLE presentation on the topic  of “Copyright and Jazz” at the legendary Smalls Jazz Club on November 15, 2018.  Jonny was accompanied by drummer Joe Strasser, bassist Ed Howard and saxophonist Joel Frahm.  Jonny led a packed room of guests through a discussion of the application of copyright law to improvised music. He covered the basics of copyrights in musical compositions and sound recordings and explored how those principles apply to arrangements, derivative works, and improvisations (the essence of jazz).  His presentation also covered how copyright works with respect to:

  • Musical compositions and sound recordings
  • Arrangements, derivative works and (the essence of jazz) improvised works
  • Who pays and who gets paid.

Smalls is a legendary venue where both veterans and up-and-coming jazz musicians have performed since the early 1990s.
