Customs Alert - Mandatory Country Of Origin Labeling For Fish & Shellfish

04.20.2005

USDA Enforcement of Country of Origin Labeling for Fish & Shellfish

The USDA has announced that on or about October 3, 2005, it will begin enforcing the rules mandating “Country of Origin Labeling” for fish and shellfish by suppliers and retailers. Violation of the labeling requirements will subject the violator to fines up to $10,000 for each violation.

A brief background review shows that the implementing regulations of the 2002 Farm Security and Rural Investment Act, as published in the Federal Register, require suppliers and retailers to provide information on country of origin and method of production.
