CLL Hosts a National Institute of Military Justice Board Meeting

On October 15, CLL hosted a Board meeting of its client, the National Institute of Military Justice (NIMJ). The meeting was chaired by CLL Senior Counsel Ronald W. Meister, who is Chair of NIMJ’s Board and head of CLL’s military law practice.

NIMJ is a private non-profit organization, founded in 1991, and dedicated to the fair administration of justice in the armed forces and improved public understanding of military justice. Its leadership includes former judge advocates, private practitioners, and legal scholars. Its website may be found at www.nimj.org.

The meeting was convened to discuss the possible extension of President Biden’s pardon for convictions of possession of marijuana under federal law to comparable convictions of servicemembers under the penal provisions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Board members of NIMJ participated in the meeting in person in CLL’s Board Room and by Zoom link from locations around the United States. The Board resolved to prepare a policy statement for possible submission to the Departments of Justice and Defense.

Following the formal Board meeting, Board members participated in a workshop to review drafts of scholarly papers on various aspects of military justice, including the role of JAG officers, the structure and jurisdiction of courts-martial, and the need for a separate system of military courts.
